Our Doctors and Staff
What Is a General Practitioner?
"GP" stands for General Practitioner, a doctor who specialises in the general practice of medicine. Sometimes people refer to their GP as "my doctor" or "family" doctor. Your GP will diagnose a health problem from a range of possibilities, often with little information available to them.
Your GP then provides ongoing management of the condition and coordinates your care when other health professionals, community services or local support are required. GPs also promote health and well-being, either by preventing disease or catching it early.

We have four full-time male doctors and one female part-time doctor and are actively seeking more medical staff. We are a teaching practice with James Cook University and can host GP registrars for further training. All our doctors are Vocationally Registered as General Practitioners and are committed to family medicine and continuing medical education.
Why do I have to wait for an appointment and why can’t I get in to see my doctor?
There is a national shortage of GPs, specialists and nurses, especially in regional and rural areas. Rapid growth in our local population further burdens a limited resource—the number of hours a doctor works and the number of patients a doctor can responsibly provide care for each day.
This Practice continues its search to fill medical vacancies. Our Practice workload has increased dramatically but we continue to meet emergency or acute requests based on medical need. If you need urgent care, you will be offered the first available appointment with any doctor in the Practice. In an emergency you may be referred to the Ambulance Service or asked to attend the Practice immediately.
If you are concerned about not seeing your usual doctor at this Practice, please be assured that all our doctors have access to your medical history unless you requested confidentiality, and our doctors frequently share the care of patients. Your choice of doctor will be respected and we will do our utmost to satisfy your request.
What can you do to help?
- Be sure to advise reception staff if you need immediate medical care. We use a nationally recognised triage system to quickly assess common conditions, but it relies on the information you provide.
- Please let us know if you need more time. This will help both you and us to manage our busy days.
- Be prepared for your appointment and jot down any medications you may need.
- Monitor your medications and leave sufficient time for an appointment before supplies run out.
